One of my lenses, when you try to focus and you reach the min or max focus, its hard to tell if you stopped or not. The focus ring continues to turn.
If I have a FF, will it be possible to have something either in the gear or on the follow focus that prevents it from turning more? |

Oh, I just noticed there is a new V3 coming out and it has that stopping feature I was talking about. Cool. Just what I wanted.
I watched the video about it and well, I hope it will not be expensive! The V2 is already a hell of a lot! So is everything else now since everything nearly went up in price!!
And the new V3 will be able to have a double sided Follow Focus! YEAH!! There goes more money down the drain! |

Michael - glad you found the info on the V3. I got my hands on it at NAB and it's a very solid piece of gear.
FYI the V2 is not expensive at all compared to other similar quality Follow Focus units on the market. I guess "expensive" is all relative, but in the grand scheme of things, a FF unit is one of the things you absolutely shouldn't skimp on.
A somewhat comparable follow focus is the Arri MFF-1, which is priced around $1700. Or you could grab a FF-5 for around $4k... it's your choice.
How's the Redrock follow focus pricing looking now? _________________ Trevor Meeks

Comparing to other companies, I know its a lot less, which is awesome. But, comparing to how much I have on me, its super expensive.
Also, its $600+ for a piece of metal and plastic! Something that doesn't cost much to make and selling it for so much is insane!!
But its like that everywhere. I'm a, or was a magician. I used large props and boy, were they expensive! Even something that you can make yourself for $5 would cost you $100+ because there is a revealed "method" behind it.
So, is there any more info on the V3? Like price and estimated release date?
I hope the price will be pretty much the same as the V2.
ALSO, about the new locking mechanism. When I turn my focus ring on the lens the ring will turn beyond max or min. If I have the FF on, and it has the lock, the ring may still turn beyond max or min? |

Just like all of the other expected new products, the FF3 is slated for a release sometime this summer. Redrock won't be providing definite dates or prices until they're ready to release the products. _________________ Trevor Meeks

The new redrock follow focus has two hard stops that you can slide to keep you from going beyond the max/min on servo based focuses. If you have a lens with true manual focus you don't have to use the hard stops. _________________ Daniel Colmenares

Actually...
If I get the new Wireless Follow Focus, then I wont need to get a Follow Focus any more will I?
And with the remote follow focus, and if I have an ipod touch, anyone can pull focus for me, it looks that simple to use. Just keep the arrow a lined with the markers. |

Michael,
I hope that was sarcasm. The 1st AC will always be one of the most important people in your shoot, there is a reason why they are the department head in film productions even above the camera operator. Once you work with a good one you realize just how much they bring to a production. _________________ Daniel Colmenares

Michael
Good questions. Here are some thoughts for you:
| Quote: | | If I get the new Wireless Follow Focus, then I wont need to get a Follow Focus any more will I? |
They are complementary: They serve different purposes. it's like asking if you get an airbrush will you no longer need a paint brush? They serve different purposes. Many focus pullers prefer the 'human touch' of a follow focus because there is a direct connection between the lens and your hand, and there's something about that connection that really speaks to some people.
| Quote: | | And with the remote follow focus, and if I have an ipod touch, anyone can pull focus for me, it looks that simple to use. Just keep the arrow a lined with the markers. |
The microRemote is a fantastic piece of gear and yes, it is absolutely designed to significantly lower the cost and expertise required for pulling focus remotely. Providing a visual layout of all the elements of focus helps anyone understand what's going on and - as you say - just keep the arrow aligned with the markers will deliver results. An experienced AC is always best, but we don't all always have that option or budget, so the microRemote will absolutely help you in that regard.

Hm. Well, I have my eyes set on the wireless then. As long as the price is not going to drag me down.
I wanted to see the video about the V3 again, but I cannot find it. Can anyone send it to me? thanks |

At around $4,000-$5000+ that's for you to decide. _________________ Trevor Meeks

It all depends on the setup you build. For a motor, the iPhone remote, microTape, etc, etc it gets up to the $4k mark. If you are just using the "wired" remote that attaches to a handle, etc - then it is cheaper ($1k range)
At least that is what I heard when I was at NAB watching the presentation...
Don't expect the wireless to be cheaper than the current FFv2 is now. |

it also depends on when the videos you saw were made, Michael. The price point has changed since the system was first announced. We really won't know until it's released, but you need to understand that most wireless follow focus systems sell in the $10,000 to $30,000 range.
Again, your idea of "affordable" is subjective... _________________ Trevor Meeks
